Puro Instinct answer the Questions of Doom
Finally tracked down Piper from Puro Instinct, shortly after the band were featured in Strip Steve's new song 'Astral Projection', and then dropped the new Puro track Dream Lover, and it seems as if Puro removed the gauze of their debut and instead brought some future pop into the equation, the only way these two Hollywood urchin sister could bring it.... shit's changed up and things just got better. We had no choice but to get Puro Instinct in for this week's Questions of Doom.
Do you consider Puro Instinct still as a 'duo', or more as a band?
Duo for the most part, but we've been working with some really awesome producers like Alejandro Cohen of Pharoahs, Strip Steve, and most recently our friend Michael Kim for our recordings and live show. Trying out some new looks, experimenting with pleats and things
What was your initial manifesto when recording Headbangers..?
We just wanted to make something fun, sexy and fucked up for people to do whatever to. Someone told me their friend lost her virginity to "Silky Eyes". That's what we like to hear. Hoping the next record gets a lot more young people in the zone.
How did you decide on the radio party concept? It carries an almost hip hop feel? Was that intentional?
Yeah, man. We enlisted R Stevie Moore as our "DJ Salt E. Nutz" of sorts and pressed "record".
It's been almost a year since its release. How do you feel about the album and its reception?
We're glad we did it and we're stoked for the next round...
How did you hook up with Strip Steve on the recent collaboration?
He sent us a beat over the holidays last year while we were in hibernation, and it sounded really dank, so we jammed on it and boom - done. Shout out to Big Cisco and Skott Daviz!
It seems as if you are constantly morphing Puro Instinct into various aesthetics. Do you feel there is a narrative to what you do?
We just want to get deeper and deeper into what we do musically without ever figuring out what that is...
Ariel Pink seems to hold a major influence on LA music scene. He's helped out Puro early on. How did the band hook up with him?
We just cried until he agreed to google translate "You're Still My 'Yagi" and record it into my 8-track.
Do you feel Puro Instinct is defined by California?
More so by our broke swagger and flagrant lack of professionalism
You've got excellent crate diggin' skills. Do you think that provides constant inspiration?
I actually haven't been able to afford records lately but thankfully the internet is a bottomless pit of wonder and whimsy.
What would you consider the 'surprise' inspiration of Puro Instinct?
PJ Sparkles, Terminator, Eternal Champions, Angelyne, First Couzinz, Zapp
And what is the greatest misconception?
That we love them hoes? I don't know- interview's gotta lotta ball-busters this time around, Paul
Who should we be checkin' out?
All sortsa fools but off the top of my head- Pharoahs, SFV ACiD, Secret Circuit, Suzanne Kraft, James Ferraro, Outer Limitz, The Samps... Strip Steve's new album is really dope
